The Khumbu, south of Mount Everest, is the homeland of the Sherpa people. Trails link villages such as Namche Bazaar, Khumjung and Tengboche, where the monastery looks across to Ama Dablam and Everest.

Sagarmatha National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Most treks start with a short flight to Lukla and climb gradually to allow time to acclimatise.

Getting there
Flights to Lukla leave from Kathmandu or, in busy seasons, from Ramechhap (Manthali), a road journey of several hours from Kathmandu.
