Kathmandu Valley

Three old royal cities, Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur, and seven monument zones listed together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The valley holds Nepal's capital and two neighbouring cities that were once separate kingdoms. Their palace squares, temples and courtyards were built largely by Newar craftspeople, and much of their brick and woodwork is still in daily use.

The UNESCO listing covers seven monument zones: the Durbar Squares of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur, the Buddhist stupas of Swayambhunath and Boudhanath, and the Hindu temples of Pashupatinath and Changu Narayan.
